THE ESSENTIAL FAMILY KITCHEN CHECKLIST!

Updated: Apr 26

The team at System Six Kitchens have been inspired to write an essential checklist on how to create the perfect family kitchen! After being blown away by Lizzie and Steve’s family-style kitchen featured in our recent Case Study, we were able to gain insight from our designer, Carly King, on how to achieve that family-style design that they absolutely adore in their new kitchen.

Lizzie wanted her kitchen to fit around her family lifestyle and her husband Steve’s passion for cooking. After drawing up some designs and getting nowhere with other kitchen companies, she decided to get in touch with System Six Kitchens. Read their full story here! When you’re in the planning stage of your kitchen, the layout, style and choice of appliances will be your first priority. Once you’ve made these decisions, you can think about the extras listed below to really drive that family vibe home.

CLEAR SOME SPACE

A great way to encourage your little ones to help in the kitchen is to make sure there’s enough room for them to help! Wall storage and open shelving can be a great way to free up worktop space so that there’s plenty of room for them to participate in food preparation.

TAKE A STEP UP!

When planning the space, don’t forget to consider a shorter set of legs! If you have a Kitchen Island, make it easier for smaller children to access the work surface by including Bar Stools to give children comfortable access to worktops and surfaces.

PROTECTION!

Another thing to consider is easy to wipe surfaces and materials! Consider a durable worktop like Quartz and a floor that’s easy to sweep and mop after your children have blitzed the area. Upstands and tiled walls will also add an additional layer of protection that you might not have thought of!

FAMILY TABLE!

Finally, one of the most essential elements to any family kitchen is a table! Without this, there would be no dedicated space to have dinner with your family. You don’t have to limit this space to eating only either, consider this space for arts & crafts or homework for the children while cooking is prepared by the adults.

We hope this checklist has been useful, but if you're looking for some more in-depth ideas then get in touch with one of our Kitchen Designers!
