Open Plan Shaker Kitchen

ROB & SARAH

Rob and Sarah purchased their 1960s house with a view to transforming everything. Discover how they worked alongside Anna at System Six Kitchens to achieve their dream kitchen.

RETURNING CUSTOMERS

Rob and Sarah are no strangers to System Six Kitchens – they had previously worked with Anna to design the kitchen in their previous home. In their new home, the kitchen is situated in what was the original barn and opens up into an extension. This brings lots of light into the open-plan kitchen that overlooks and is surrounded by 19 acres of beautiful woodland.

TRANSFORMING THE SPACE

When Rob and Sarah first moved in the kitchen was characterised by its dark real wood doors and a Y-shaped structure in the middle of the room and the range cooker that sat to the right of the room. They brainstormed to try and find a way of incorporating this structure into their new kitchen design but ultimately decided to leave it out when they discovered it wasn’t load-bearing. This is when the design process alongside Anna really began, and the kitchen was stripped to its bare bones to create a blank canvas.

THE RESULT

Anna worked with Sarah and Rob to maximise the natural light in the room by creating an open-plan space with lightly coloured shaker cabinets. The modern farmhouse aesthetic is characterised by real wood accents that includes the eye-catching kitchen island. This is an in-frame feature unit from our Purley range. The kitchen also features pull out chopping boards from the same range, an excellent example of the increased preparation and storage space created by Anna when designing the space. The hidden extractor fan and dishwasher that cleverly displays the time on the floor are subtle details that add convenience to the everyday use of the space.

The finished kitchen is a airy and homely space, perfect for cooking and socialising. The real-wood corner larder that sits to the right side of the sink, makes for a perfectly presented food storage space and doubles as the perfect hiding spot for their son when playing hide and seek!
